One Sunday morning, I rushed out the door, grabbed my shoes, and hopped in the car. Halfway to church, I looked down — and realised I was wearing two completely different shoes.
One black, square-toed with a chunky heel.
One blue, pointed with silver trim.
And I was leading worship.
That morning, I stood playing my guitar — barefoot.
Feet That Keep Us Steady
Our feet (usually in matching shoes!) are what anchor us when we’re standing, help us keep our balance, and carry us to where we need to go. They work together with a purpose, moving toward a destination. One foot isn’t designed to walk off on its own. Without both firmly planted, we can stumble or fall.
The Bible gives us this reminder in Ephesians 3:17:
“…with BOTH feet planted firmly on Love.”
The NLT says:
“Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.”
Growing Deep Roots in Love
Like a plant, we only grow strong when we are planted deep enough to take root. If we’re barely touching the soil—or worse, sitting on top of it—life’s first gust of wind can knock us over. But a plant with deep roots can survive storms.
Our lives are the same. Without deep roots in God’s love, we’re vulnerable to the negative effects that pressures, disappointments, and setbacks bring. But when we trust in Jesus’ love through every challenge, we find security, stability, strength, and nourishment.
The Message puts Ephesians 3:18–19 this way:
“Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.”
God’s love is immeasurable. It has no limits, boundaries, or expiry date. It’s deep enough to reach your darkest place, and strong enough to hold you steady in any storm.
Standing When Life Gets Tough
Life will bring setbacks and challenges — but with both feet planted in His love, we can keep standing and walking forward. His love is what continues to carry us in these tough times, and what we can continue to carry into our homes, families, workplaces, and everywhere we go.
God is Love. He has given us His Spirit to live in us — the anchor that holds us firm. Some days, it might feel easier to give up, but the more we grow in our relationship with the God who is love, the more His Spirit strengthens us to stand.
Never giving up isn’t about pretending life is easy. It’s about trusting that no matter what comes, you are planted in something unshakeable.
And maybe… double-check your shoes before you leave the house.
💭 Reflection
Where are your “feet” planted today? In fear, worry, or your own strength — or in God’s unfailing love?
🙏 Prayer
Lord, plant me deep in Your love. Help me to stand when storms come, to walk forward in faith, and to carry Your love wherever I go. Amen.
