There’s an incredible story in 2 Kings 4:8–17 of a woman who added an extra room onto her home — something so practical and hospitable — and this made a room also to see God grace and goodness over her life .
This woman lived during the days of Elisha the prophet. We don’t know her name, but her faith was amazing. She honoured Elisha as a man of God, building him a room so he could rest, refresh, and pray whenever he travelled through Shunem. She asked nothing in return.
Elisha wanted to bless her and discovered she had never been able to have a child. He prophesied she would have a son — and she did.
Years later, that son suddenly fell ill and died. Unshaken, she laid him on Elisha’s bed, (in the room she had made for him), saddled her donkey, and went to find the prophet. She was able to tell her husband in faith as she was leaving , “All is well.” Elisha returned, prayed, and the boy came back to life.
She had made a physical room for the prophet, but she had also made a room for God to be in her heart and home. Her love for God and His presence kept her faith strong — strong enough to believe for her son’s healing .
We often read stories of other people’s breakthoughs , while holding onto our own unanswered prayers. This story reminds us that God values us equally — the same God who moved for the Shunammite woman is the God who hears you today.
Proverbs 13:12 says, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick…” The Shunammite woman knew the ache of disappointment — first, in her inability to have a child; then, in the loss of her son. Yet she positioned herself to trust God in the middle of her grief. And she saw Him move.
Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.”
I don’t know your name either, but Jesus does — and He loves you. Make room for Him in your daily life. Speak His name over every circumstance. Even if you see no change yet, don’t give up. He is working.
💭 Reflection
Where do you need God’s hope and presence most today? Make your life a “room” where the Holy Spirit lives , where you talk to Him and enjoy His fellowship every day.
🙏 Prayer
Jesus, I speak Your name over every circumstance in my life, especially those I don’t understand. Thank You that with You, there is always hope. Nothing is impossible for You, and Your power makes all things possible. I thank You for my prayers answered, in Your perfect time. Amen.
