The Story of the Young Slave Girl of Naaman who had Courage though she lived in Captivity
Sometimes we feel we have been taken captive. Captive in out thoughts , our time , our relationships or challenges we now are facing.
The slave girl (I wish we knew her name) had every reason to stay silent.
She had been taken from her home in Israel to be a slave. She had been taken from her parents, her friends, her people, and everything familiar.
Now she lived as a slave in a foreign land, serving the wife of a powerful Syrian commander named Naaman.
It’s hard to comprehend what her feelings of islolation, loss, and loneliness would be. It would have been so easy and understandable for her heart to be cold and bitter to those she served and had her life and future in their hands.
But instead when you read this short story in 2 Kings (Bible) this young girl chose compassion for her master and also faith to believe he could be healed.
Her Faith spoke
Naaman, her master, had leprosy which was in those days an incurable disease that brought pain, shame, and isolation.
In this story we see this young girl’s incredible compassion for Naaman even though he was holding her in captivity.
She said to her mistress in 2 Kings 5:3:
“If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would heal him of his leprosy.”
Her words were bold.
She didn’t say “maybe” or “perhaps.”
She spoke with confidence and assurance that “He would heal him.”
This young girl’s faith refused to be limited by her situation. Even though she was bound by circumstance, she kept her faith and trust in God (through the prophets).
She knew that God was not the cause of her enslavement. She knew that God could heal Naamans disease and she wanted to share this to the very people she was held a slave too.
Her life speaks to me of a young girl walking in her personal convictions and faith ; believing and trusting in the powerful and ever present God that no person can enslave or hold captive.
She knew God could do miracles and set Naaman free from disease and she was willing to share this with her captives.
Freedom in the Midst of Captivity
God gave her courage and he will give you courage in captive situataions when you ask.
Our courage comes from keeping our trust in God when our circumstances are tough. We trust because He is always with you.
Instead of bitterness, she chose love.
Instead of silence, she chose to speak up.
Instead of despair, she chose hope.
Through her sharing her faith, she became a messenger of God’s healing power that would lead Naaman to encounter the living God through the prophet Elisha.
Finding Freedom in Your Story
We may not be slaves like that young girl, but many of us know what it feels like to be captive — to know fear, disappointment, regret, anxiety, shame, failure.
Jesus who loves us and died for our freedom is the same God who loved that young girl and gave her daily faith and courage.
Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are no longer bound by what holds us back. Trust Him and give him daily the cares and problems that feel like they are ensnaring you and He will breaks fear and hopelessness off your situations and challenges. Jesus always leads us walking forward — often its one step at a time — but it is always leading us into freedom and healing .
Encouragement for You Today
If you feel trapped or controlled by your circumstances, remember this young girl.
She didn’t wait for her situation to change before choosing faith.
She believed right where she was that God could do the impossible.
Speak life and blessing into hopeless places.
Pray daily for Gods courage and strength to walk in freedom and healing even while you wait for change.
God’s walks with you.
Prayer 🙏
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the faith and courage of the young girl who spoke with faith and trust in You.
Help me to have that same courage — to speak life, to show love, and to believe in Your power even in hard places.
Where I feel trapped or limited, remind me that You are my freedom.
Break the chains of fear, disappointment, and bitterness in my heart, and fill me with Your peace , Love and courage.
May my words and actions point others to Jesus, Your healing power and endless love.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
